The middle

Alas, we are far too curious for such fatal mazes.

V for vignette

The problem with the maze was not that it was hard to leave. It was finding your way in that was tricky. They’d built it that way, because of the middle.

They’d hidden it well. It was better for everyone if nobody knew the maze existed. If you spotted the maze, you were in danger; if you found the entrance, you were more or less doomed. So compelling were its twists and turns, its imagined corners and shady avenues, that once inside you could not help but resolve it.

If you were lucky, you perished before you reached the middle.
