the pit

we dig a pit
there is gravelly dirt and
centipedes and worms squirming in the darkness
we can see the shadows by the light of the moon
we dig a pit

you give us money
give us money now, or we’ll burn down your home.
fiery torches flicker against your windows
you can’t pay the price, and I am merciless.
we loot your belongings and set the flames to the wood
it licks up into the sky as you flee
I laugh
we all laugh

we dig a pit
it goes down and down
centipedes and worms squirming in the darkness
our shovels slide into the earth
over and over
making a mound.
we dig a pit

you give us money
give us money now or I’ll put a hole through your head
the trigger is easy in my hand
you were stupid and made a sudden movement
I strip your pockets of valuables as you lay on the ground

we dig a pit
it’s for your mother, my brothers, our friends
we are angry and cold
blood freezing, boiling
a murderous light in our eyes as revenge is played out on many faces
we’re burying our lives
spades thunking into the earth and flinging wet dirt
repetitively
we dig a pit
